Continuing the fight back: Nigel Wilson joined L&G as CFO in the depths of the financial crisis in 2009. Can the former consultant continue to grow the business and outperform the FTSE100 in choppy waters?

Before Legal & General, Nigel worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Co where his clients included BP, Citibank, Cadbury's, Santander, Kingfisher, Courtaulds, Whitbread and Globe Investment Trust. He held the role of Managing Director at Stanhope Properties, Head of Corporate Finance and Group Commercial Director at Dixons Group and Chief Executive, Corporate at Guinness Peat Aviation.
In 1996 he became Group Finance Director of Viridian Group, the Irish energy firm, helping to build the company’s Viridian Capital portfolio. This work saw him given the role of Managing Director of Viridian Capital in 2000.
In 2001 he became Chief Financial Officer and Deputy Chief Executive of United Business Media, the exhibitions and trade magazines group.
Nigel joined Legal & General as Group Financial Officer in 2009 and played a leading role in charting the the insurance company through the financial crisis. He succeeded Tim Breedon as Group Chief Executive on June 30 2012.

Nigel Wilson was promoted to the top job at insurance group Legal and General from his role as Chief Financial Officer. New to the role of CEO, the Financial Times reports that some analysts believe Nigel could be more likely to pursue acquisitions than his predecessor, who proved wary of big insurance deals.Nigel has a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was a Kennedy Scholar.

Away from work
Nigel is married with five daughters. He is the current 800m British Masters Athletics Champion. Nigel was appointed as Senior Independent Director (SID) of The Capita Group plc in 2010 and was SID/Chairman of Halfords Group Plc until 31 March 2011.
