CEOs No Longer Have The Luxury To Focus On The Next 100 Years
It's a perennial debate: how far ahead should a leader be thinking about the strategic direction of a firm? In last week's BBC CEO Guru, host and Xinfu CEO Steve Tappin heard from the heads of Chinese firms such as Lenovo and Alibaba, who extolled the virtues of planning ahead as far as 100 years. Rita Gunther McGrath, professor at Columbia Business School and author of 'The End of Competitive Advantage' responds that adhering doggedly to the "100 year strategy" could prevent companies from innovating in a rapid and responsive fashion: "It sounds eerily like what people were saying about Japanese companies in the 80s." She argues that long-term strategic planning "should never blind a leader to the fast pace of the here-and-now". read more...

Who New CEOs Fire First
When you start as a new CEO, is your first inclination to hire or to fire? New research by RHR international shows which executives incoming CEOs are most likely to replace, and how this can vary when the new boss is in a CEO role for the first time. The report finds that whether the new CEO came in as an insider or an outsider, almost all of them wished that they had moved even faster to shake up their executive teams. They typically say: \"I knew in my gut that was not going to work with that individual, and I wish I had trusted that gut feeling and made that decision faster.\" read more...

Is Giving the Secret to Getting Ahead?
How do you view dealing with an inbox filled with 300 emails? As a task to be dispensed with perfunctorily (or avoided), or an opportunity to help people? They argue that such leaders know how to turn up the volume, and that \"more is more\". They engage in highly collaborative behavior. They encourage those about them to be more innovative.
